Tis the Season to Be Jolly

Sorry it has been so long in between posts. I know I have been keeping you guys on edge because you haven't heard from me, but it has been quite a crazy couple of weeks.

I guess I learned my lesson...don't start a blog at the end of the semester!

Unfortunately, I have been unable to figure out how to not waste my life. I actually haven't even been able to try and figure it out. I have so many final projects, exams, quizzes, clinicals, etc.

I must say, however, I have found a new appreciation for my life and for my Lord Jesus Christ. I had the excellent opportunity to sit down with a courageous young woman and hear her struggle.

This girl was 20 years old in her junior year at OSU studying acting and theatre, she was engaged to be married and her life was just now starting to begin. Almost two years ago, she was involved in a horrific car accident. She was on her way home from her job at Starbucks when two young guys thought it would be a good idea to street race under the influence. One guy lost control of his car at the end of the quarter mile stretch, ran over the median and slammed into her head on. At the scene of the accident the cop that arrived first saw her bible sitting on the dashboard and started reading to her as she continued to bleed profusely. She was rushed to the hospital, died three times and she was put in a barbituate (drug induced, I'm a nursing student) coma. The MRI of her brain showed the trauma severed her optic nerve, which means if she survived this accident she would never see ever again. She had increased intra cranial pressure (IICP) of 90 (normal is less than 15). She had significant trauma to her entire left side. This girl was not supposed to live!!!!

She is a christian! Her ever so supportive family stayed by her side the entire time and prayed. Then they prayed, and they also did some more praying! Her father would sit at the bedside and read the Bible to her and the rest of her family. 3 months after her horrific accident, she woke up. In the past two years this amazing woman has been through grueling physical, occupational, and speech therapy. It's crazy that she survived this accident, although you might be thinking it's sad she can't see anymore (you know severed optic nerve). It's quite amazing all this technology we have in this world and we can't repair nerves so people like her can see. Thankfully, though, this particular girl has a master healer and a severed nerve can't stop Him, especially since He created it! She is doing great now. She still has a bit of nerve damage down her left side, she can't always properly use her hand because it is contracted. She walks, talks, hears, SEES, and most important she is LIVING HER LIFE! All glory to Jesus Christ for healing her! I had to hold back tears hearing her story. She is an incredible human being, I believe that is because of who she trusts in, Jesus Christ.

I can't deny I thanked the Lord for my giving me life and for giving me great health. As much as I want to complain for not having everything I want, or for the pain in my knee, or because I don't like my job, or because not everything goes my way...I need to take a step back and count the blessings in my life because none of those other things matter! I need to just think, 'Oh well, Jesus is coming and I have a new life in him anyway!'

Tis the season to be Jolly! And remember what is really important in your lives!

  2. This is an awesome real life story. This is why I have a hard time "predicting" the outcome of a trauma patient to their family. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
